Smoking is a major public health concern, being a leading cause of preventable diseases such as lung cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory disorders (Adamu et al., 2024). In Niger State, smoking rates have been rising, particularly among young adults and people in rural communities (Suleiman et al., 2023). Smoking cessation is crucial in reducing the burden of smoking-related diseases, and healthcare providers, particularly nurses, play a vital role in supporting patients who want to quit smoking. Smoking cessation counseling involves a series of strategies aimed at helping individuals understand the risks of smoking, providing resources, and offering behavioral support to overcome addiction (Ali et al., 2023).
Nurses are in a unique position to provide smoking cessation counseling because they have frequent interactions with patients and can offer personalized advice and encouragement (Sulaimon et al., 2023). However, there is limited research on the effectiveness of nurse-led smoking cessation counseling in Niger State. This study aims to assess the impact of smoking cessation counseling by nurses on the smoking behaviors of patients in Niger State, exploring the outcomes of such interventions in terms of smoking cessation rates and improvements in health behaviors.
Smoking remains a major health challenge in Niger State, and despite the known benefits of smoking cessation counseling, many patients continue to smoke, contributing to increased rates of smoking-related diseases (Dahiru et al., 2023). Nurses are often at the forefront of health promotion and disease prevention, yet the impact of their counseling efforts on smoking behaviors has not been adequately studied in Niger State. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of smoking cessation counseling provided by nurses in changing patient smoking behaviors.
This study will focus on nurses in health facilities across Niger State and their role in providing smoking cessation counseling. The study will assess the effectiveness of these interventions on patient smoking behaviors. Limitations may include challenges in measuring long-term cessation outcomes and potential biases in self-reported patient data.
